A ‘Heritage Statement’ or ‘Statement of Heritage Significance’ is an impartial, objective assessment of a heritage asset and its setting. It is a report which documents why the heritage asset and its setting is significant.
Heritage statements are often required as part of the planning process, normally submitted alongside a planning application. Heritage statements are often required when alternations to a listed building or building of historic interest are being sought.
What’s Involved?
The amount of detail that is required in a Heritage Statement will vary according to the particular proposal. It will cover:
- a statement and assessment of significance of archaeological and cultural heritage assets;
- an assessment of the likely impact of the proposals on the identified heritage assets, and
- outline mitigation to address likely impacts.
